India Gate is a war memorial. Its name was earlier All India War Memorial. It is a memorial to the 84 thousand Indian Army soldiers who were martyred in the First World War and the Third Anglo-Afghan War between 1914 and 1921.

This memorial gate was designed by English architect Sir Edwin Landseer Lutyens. Sir Edwin Lutyens designed 66 war memorials in Europe.

Apart from this, he was also a member of the Imperial War Graves Commission (IWGC). The construction of India Gate was also a part of the work of the Imperial War Graves Commission.

The foundation stone for the construction of India Gate was laid by the Duke of Connaught on 10 February 1921. Almost ten years after the foundation stone was laid, on 12 February 1931, this war memorial was inaugurated by the Viceroy Lord Irwin.

The structure of Amar Jawan Jyoti is built under the India Gate. Amar Jawan Jyoti was inaugurated on 26 January 1972 by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
