Indian Congress Party President Mallikarjun Kharge was born on 21 July 1942 in a Dalit family in Warwati village of Bidar district of Hyderabad. His father’s name was Mappanna Kharge and mother’s name was Sabavva Kharge. When Mallikarjun was just 7 years old, he lost his mother and sister.
At that time, there were a lot of riots. In one such riot, his house was looted and set on fire. Both his mother and sister were killed in that. And at the age of just 7, he lost his mother.
After that he had to leave Waravati village and come to his uncle in Gulbarga (Kulburgi) city of Karnataka. Mallikarjun’s early schooling was done from Gulbarga’s Nutan Vidyalaya.
After that he obtained his BA degree from Government College, Gulbarga. And later he completed his legal studies (LLB) from Seth Shankarlal Lahoti Law College, Gulbarga.
Mallikarjun then started his law practice as a junior with the Indian judge Shivraj Patil of Gulbarga. And during his practice, he had to fight the cases of labour unions.
Mallikarjun married Radhabai Kharge on 13 May 1968. Mallikarjun has three sons named Priyank, Rahul and Milind. Apart from these, Mallikarjun ji also has two daughters named Jayashree and Priyadarshini.
One of his sons, Priyank, is an MLA and earlier, he has been a minister in Karnataka. And one of his daughters, Priyadarshini, is a doctor.
Mallikarjuna announced in 2006 that he would follow Buddhism. Mallikarjuna was inclined towards politics since childhood. After that he started contributing to political activities.
Mallikarjun Kharge Political Career
Mallikarjun Kharge started his political career as a student union leader. Mallikarjun was appointed as the General Secretary of the Students Union during his college days. After this, Mallikarjun was elected as the legal advisor of the employees union at MMK Mills in 1996.
Mallikarjuna led many movements against labourers and was an influential trade union leader of the Mazdoor Sangh. Mallikarjuna then joined the Indian National Congress in 1969 and became the president of the Gulbarga city Congress Sabha.
After this, he was elected as MLA from Gurmitkal Assembly Constituency of Karnataka in 1972. And in 1973, he was elected Chairman of the Municipal Finance Inquiry Committee. In 1976, he served as Minister of State and Education Minister of Karnataka.
And in 1978, he was again elected as MLA from Gurmitkal Assembly Constituency of Karnataka. Mallikarjun ji was elected as MLA a total of 9 times. And after this, he served as Cabinet Minister and Panchayati Raj Minister of Karnataka State in 1979.
Mallikarjuna held various positions several times in his political career. Mallikarjuna contested the Gulbarga Parliamentary election in 2014 and won by 13,404 votes. After this, he was appointed as the leader of the Congress party.
Mallikarjun was elected to the Karnataka Rajya Sabha on 12 June 2020 at the age of 78. And a year later in 2021, he was made the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha. And in 2022, he resigned from the post of Leader of the Opposition to contest the presidential election on behalf of the Congress Party.
80-year-old Mallikarjun Kharge contested the election on behalf of the Indian National Congress party. And in that he defeated the opposition party by 7,897 votes. And Mallikarjun Kharge was appointed as the President of the Indian National Congress on 19 October 2022.
Mallikarjun will be 81 years old in 2023. Mallikarjun Kharge is also the first non-Gandhi leader to reach the top post of the Congress party after 24 years. Mallikarjun took charge as the President of the Congress Party from 26 October 2022.
