Sakshi Malik was born on 3 September 1992 in Mokhra village of Rohtak district of Haryana. Sakshi’s father Sukhbir Malik was a bus conductor in the Delhi Transport Corporation and her mother Sudesh Malik is a supervisor at a local health clinic.
Sakshi Malik’s father says that Sakshi got the inspiration to wrestle from her grandfather Badlu Ram. Sakshi’s grandfather was also a wrestler. She started her wrestling training at the age of just 12. She started her wrestling training in an arena in Rohtak’s Chhotu Ram Stadium under the supervision of coach Ishwar Dahiya.

Controversy
Sakshi Malik and other wrestlers like Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia together protested against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on 18 January 2023. Phogat had alleged that WFI officials and coaches were harassing women.
Phogat also accused WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexually harassing several girls. She said, “Some coaches who are favourites of the federation also misbehave with female coaches. They sexually harass girls. The WFI President has sexually harassed many girls.”
Later Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh denied all these allegations and said that no incident of sexual harassment had taken place. On 25 June 2023, he stopped his protest and decided to take the matter to court.
