Kuldhara Village Story
It is believed that at one time about 1500 Paliwal Brahmins lived in love and peace in Kuldhara village of Jaisalmer. But one night they all left that village and disappeared somewhere in the dark of that night.
Even today people have not been able to know where and why all those Paliwal Brahmins went. There are many stories and rumours behind their leaving Kuldhara Village.
According to a rumour, Jaisalmer’s minister Salim Singh used to torture his subjects a lot. Salim Singh used to levy very high taxes from his subjects. Once Salim Singh’s evil eye fell on the daughter of the head of the Paliwal Brahmin community.
Salim Singh told them about marrying the Mukhiya’s daughter forcefully. Apart from this, Salim Singh also said that if he did not get this marriage done, he would have to face dire consequences.
Instead of agreeing to Salim Singh’s proposal, they asked him for some time to think. The Paliwal Brahmins decided to leave the place instead of bowing down to the cruel minister.
Then as per the decision of the Paliwal Brahmins, 85 villagers left their ancestral village and disappeared. Before leaving, they cursed the village that no one will ever be able to live here again.
According to another rumour, people say that Salim Singh had increased the amount of tax a lot. Due to which it became even more difficult for those people to live.
Seeing all these things, those people left that place and went to some other place where they could escape from that cruel Salim Singh and live their life comfortably.
Kuldhara Village History
You can know about Kuldhara village from the history book Tarikh-e-Jaisalmer written by Lakshmi Chand in 1899. According to this book, Kadhan was the first Paliwal Brahmin who came to Kuldhara village. He also dug a pond in the village which is named Udhansar.
Actually Kuldhara village was settled by Brahmins. They came to Jaisalmer from Pali region and due to coming from Pali region they came to be known as Paliwal Brahmins. Investigation of the inscriptions of Kuldhara village shows that this village must have been settled in the beginning of the 13th century.
Later, more carvings and inscriptions were found from the ruins of Kuldhara . On studying them, it was found that on many inscriptions, Kuldhara has been mentioned as the caste of those Brahmins. Perhaps this is the reason why this village was named Kuldhara.
